Well, at least Mike isn't alone on his adventure this time though I doubt the Valors would assist us with this situation; it's no danger to them so it isn't there problem. Besides, I can take care of this. I would've preferred that everyone left with Mike, but Victor isn't going to get very far right now and I certainly can't go to the base and leave Jess and Victor by themselves.
"Hey Victor, are you fit enough to walk?"
Victor, who was half asleep at the time, lifted his head and said, "yah."
"Alright then. Jess, help Victor stand up. I'll carry the equipment."
"Can't we just go with Mike?" asked Jess.
"No and I can't leave you two alone. Not after what happened."
Jess helped Victor stand and with his arm around her shoulder, she helped him walk.
"You're going to get us killed."
"I haven't yet, have I?"
"You weren't our leader. Mike was. At least he had enough sense to leave this place."
I walked to the door with the equipment and opened it. I looked back. I was getting tired of explaining myself.
"I would've rather you've gone with him. It would've made things much easier and I'm sorry you got stuck with me, but this is how it worked out so you have a choice," I explained, "You either follow me and I'll keep you safe or you can stay behind and get killed. Either way, I'm going to destroy their base. So, are you coming or not?"
Jess and Victor walked passed me. "Fine," said Jess. I'm beginning to think my personality is why I didn't have many friends before. We began walking from street to street, all the time watching out for movement. We had to stop frequently because Victor was overexerting himself. We came across some soulless and even some of the red and blue men, but I killed them off quickly and quietly and we moved on. I switched with Jess in assisting Victor since she was becoming tired. It must have taken us a few hours to reach the base, but we soon saw it in the distance; highly decorated in blue and red with men standing guard outside.
"Alright. You two hide in the top floor of this building. I come get you when I'm done," I said.
"You drag us all the way out here and then we don't get to help?" stated Victor.
"I don't want you getting killed."
"Victor's right, I'm not going to stand by and watch," said Jess.
I thought about it for a second. "Victor, you're in no condition to help, but Jess, if you really want to help, you have to do exactly what I say, alright?"
She shook her head yes.
"This is stupid. I should be able to help in some way," whined Victor.
"Just follow me," I said as I led them into a nearby building. We climbed to the top floor, at which point I told them what they'd be doing (I decide to let Victor have a small piece of the action). Victor waited in the top floor while Jess and I climbed out the window and onto the roof.
"Oh, one thing. Do not scream or make any noises at all," I told her.
Luckily, the gap between the buildings was small enough for us to jump across. One jump after another, we inched closer to the base until we were one roof away from being next to the base. I knew if we jumped onto the next roof, the guards standing outside would hear us. It was then that I took out a small piece of mirror I broke off from the bathroom mirror in the building where Victor was staying. I reflected the sunlight at the street sign within view of window Victor suppose to be looking out of. I reflected the light at the sign three times, alerting Victor to light and throw the grenade I made out the window along with second grenade into the alley across the street. As soon as it exploded, Jess and I jumped across the gap and waited for the guards to go running to the alley, a perfect diversion (a few people from inside also came outside to see what made the noise). The gap between the base and the roof we stood on was larger than the others (I have the suspicion that this building was an apartment, one of the last buildings built in this town before the outbreak occurred. This put a small snag in the plan, but I noticed there was a fire escape, so I instructed Jess to jump onto it. She was hesitant because of the long drop, but I told her I jump as well (I had to anyways). We landed safely. We climbed to the top and I boosted her up to the roof since the fire escape didn't reach high enough. She had just gotten up to the roof when the second grenade went off, killing a few of the men standing nearby (I wasn't completed sure it would go since I made it to have a delayed detonation and so many things could have interfered with it. Glad it worked though). Now, there was yelling and screaming and men were pouring out of the building. I quickly entered the top story window. There were two undressed men in the room along with two women tied to the bedposts. I quickly threw knives at the men when they reached for their guns, but they were too far away. I didn't want to use guns just yet. I locked the door to the room.
"Who are you?" I asked them.
One woman spoke up, "Please help us! They've been..."
"Keep it down. You're going to get me killed. Now, start over," I said.
"I was passing through this town a week ago when these monsters captured me. All the woman they capture get raped daily and if we try and fight back, they kill us without thinking twice about it."
"Quit whining! I've been here for three months! Untie us!"
"Would you keep it down?"
There's a knock at the door, "What's going on in there?" says a gruff male voice.
The woman start panicking, but I signal them to be quiet. "Nothing. Just having some fun with the prisoners."
The voice suddenly changes to a happier tone, "Oh, really? Is there enough to go around?"
"Well, that depends. How many of you are out there?"
"Just me."
"I think there's enough."
The women were shaking their heads no, but when I opened the door, I stabbed him in the stomach, pulled him in, and put my hand over his mouth as I used my foot to close the door.
"If you scream, I will cut off what makes you a man, understand?"
The man shook his head. I took my hand off his mouth and although I was facing the back of his head with the knife against in throat, it looked like he was crying.
"Why are you keeping these woman as prisoners?" I asked.
"We... we need entertainment. Come on, you can understand, can't you?" he says in a crying, pleading voice.
"I don't consider rape as entertainment."
"It's not rape. These women are whores. They needed a place to stay and we gave them one in exchange for some fun."
"That's a lie!" one woman said.
"You know you wanted it. You were just teasing us..."
He couldn't say anymore since I broke his neck. The only thing that came out of his mouth anyways was lies and filth. I quickly untied the woman and gave them the clothes of the two men I killed (the men didn't need them now). I instructed one of the woman to take clip of mine and throw it on the roof. This was to alert Jess not to go through with the original plan. I had planned for her to set off a small air horn I picked up before to draw soulless to the base, but I can't do this if there are innocent hostages. I collected my knives and readied myself as the woman returned. I checked out in the hall and just when I gave the okay that it was safe to exit the room, two men walked out into the hall. I quickly opened fire on them. It was then that chaos broke out. I told the women to shoot anyone else wearing blue and red as I kicked down the door of the room across the hall and killed the men inside who were just about to open the door anyways. Only one woman in that room. I quickly freed her and gave her one of the dead men's clothes and weapons. I continued this pattern on this floor and the number of the men's deaths and the number of women freed increasing. I came across a few dead corpses in the rooms that had been there for weeks and there were men in that room (extremely sick). Any woman that wasn't familiar with guns took up anything to be used as clubs. Most of them did all they could to help while others ran away as soon as they were freed (we found most of them later on the way out, dead on the floor). There were at least twenty women standing with me as we descended the floors. On the next floor, Jess broke through one of the ventilation shafts nearby to tell me she found a passage to the first floor (just as I planned. Well, alternate plan). Half of the woman went with Jess and the others continued to kill anyone in their way. With their help, it was a lot easier than I expected. Looking out the window, some of the men were running away while others shot at the windows when they saw us (they also had to fend off the soulless since the gunfire was catching their attention). There were a great number of them, but we stood firm and took them out. It also helped that since the hallways were so narrow, there wasn't much room for them to maneuver (there was also no fear of them sneaking up on us since there were only two ways to get from floor to floor: the stairs and the fire escape, the elevator doesn't work.) As we reached the third floor, most of the men were outside and all of the prisoners they had were on the top floor so it was just a matter of escaping. They began throwing grenades and smoke bombs in through the window, many of which the men had most likely intentional left open. I hurriedly told the woman to throw them back: some succeeded and some failed. This continued until we heard the sound of gunfire and shouting. I figured Jess and the others must have reached the first floor and open fire on them. From then on, it was easy. Any red and blue man who didn't run like a coward was killed.
We met up with Jess and the others on the ground floor. They thanked us and wanted to go with us, but we told them that we really needed to catch up with our friends though I told them that they should consider staying together and they could take the supplies still left inside the base to start off. There is power in numbers. Hopefully this time, good numbers. None of us could stay long since soulless were beginning to gather in large numbers.
Jess and I ran back to get Victor. It seemed the entire plan was successful though I forgot one little detail: to check for revenge seekers. I should have expected some of the men to wait until the excitement ceased before attacking again. When we reached Victor, he high fives us and Jess had an excitement look, that was, until two men in red and blue came in.
"Well, looks like we found our trouble makers. Thanks to you, the base is a wreck and we'll have to start from scratch. Still, I'm sure the other survivors will be thrilled when I tell them we killed the ones responsible," said one of the men. He looked over at Jess, "Well, maybe not all of you."
I was a quick draw, but I'm not that fast. He already had his gun out.
"Enough talk. Sweetie?" said the man to Jess, "Why don't you come over here so you don't get shot?"
She shook her head no. The man suddenly got angry and he pointed his gun at her. I stepped in front of her. Suddenly, the man's partner fell and a gunshot was heard. The red and blue man fell forward. Three of the women stood over them.
"I guess that makes us even," I said.
"We'll take care of the rest. You have our word." The woman who had fired the gun said. They quickly left without a goodbye.
Afterwards, Jess spoke to me, "Now what do we do?"
"We go meet up with Mike."
"I mean how?" said Jess, "We won't get far with Victor still like this."
"Would you both stop talking about me like I'm not here! I can travel."
"Even if you could, we're nearly half a day behind Mike and Lexi. We need a way to catch up quickly," I said.
"How about a car?" suggested Jess.
I'd been thinking of that opinion, but to find a car in good condition with gas would be tough. I told Jess and Victor this. Jess pointed to a closed garage door. As it turned out, there was a perfectly fine car behind it (I may start calling Jess the lucky charm of the group). It wasn't too tough to break into the building connected to it. I opened the garage door to let Jess and Victor in. We began packing our stuff into it and helping Victor into the car when I heard a gentle voice behind me.
"Hello?" said the voice.
I nearly wet my pant. I spun around and it was then I was face to face with a pretty young woman with brown hair.
"May I come with you?" she asked.
Something seemed strange about her.
"You must be one of the women from the base. I'm sorry, but, uh, like I said, we really have to be going and there isn't a lot of room. Besides, you can stay with the others. I'm sure you'll make a great team."
"I don't want to stay with them. I want to go with you."
"Why?"
She looked down at the ground, "I just want to go with you."
I looked at Jess and Victor who both had puzzled expressions. I couldn't tell what she really wanted or if she was acting. Perhaps I was over thinking it at the time and she just wanted to travel with us. We did save her so she probably thinks she'll be safe with us.
"I'm not sure..."
"Please! I promise I won't be a burden at all. I'll do whatever you want!"
"Woe. Slow down," I said. Every instinct tells me that I should stay away from needy people like her, but I couldn't just leave her here. It looked like she was about to break into tears. She may not survive on her own. I looked behind her and I saw soulless walking toward us in the distance.
"Okay. You can come along."
She smiled happily and crawled into the back of the car.
"Jess, you're driving," I said.
"I never got my license."
"Neither did I."
I was about to go around the car to get into the passenger seat when Jess grabbed my arm and said quietly, "Did you really think we should bring her?"
"No, but I already said yes. Let's just leave," I said just as quietly.
Jess drove out of the garage, narrowly avoiding some soulless and we drove off down the street, heading for the town's exit.
