Jack's Diary - Appreciation and Death - Day 67

As I expected, I didn’t fall asleep. I watched the night turn into morning with a blaze of colors charging over the horizon like a stampede of rainbow mares. I heard birds, a somewhat rare sight in this new world, desperately calling for mates when there are few to none to be found. It was sad to realize they may die alone without a partner or without starting a family. In this world, a happy ending in life is rare, so rare I’ve yet to see one. It may seem weird that I’m writing this, but when all you have to do is listen, see, and feel the life going on around you for hours, you start to think about it and appreciate it and feel sorrow for it. During that time, I think I heard every sound you could imagine from a cricket to a moaning soulless to a hawk squawking. I even heard the sound of a motorcycle or something coming from the city. Probably some survivor trying to get out (not a very smart choice since the sound attracts danger). I was about three quarters of the way up the tree so I had a pretty nice view. I spent most of my time watching a large come and go from a nest near the top of the tree I was in. I’m guessing it is a hawk. I really wanted my own hawk or some kind of large bird. I could teach it to gouge out the eyes of my enemies and to go pick up stuff for me. It would be awesome. I was tempted to climb the tree and take one of its babies if it had any, but the hawk would go completely nuts and probably peck me to death. I’m pretty sure even if I waited until it left, it would quickly rush back and kill me (mother intuition).
There was one more town near by to search and after that, I’m heading back to base. Mike may have already made his way back, but if he didn’t, there isn’t much I can do anymore except arrange a search party to check the woods since Mike would have to drop 100 IQ points before considering searching any towns or cities further away, leaving the woods as the last option. The morning was quiet and there isn’t really much to talk about. I was hungry, but decided to eat some granola bars I keep with me (I hadn’t eaten in about two days). I also ate some wild raspberries I came across.
My path to the last town was unheeded by anything or anyone. The town (or city. I don’t know anymore what to call them). It was abnormally quiet. No soulless wandering the streets, no bugs buzzing by, and hardly any breeze at all. Well, I guess there were soulless, but all the ones I came across were dead: shot, bulged, and dismembered. A somewhat disturbing sight, but it didn’t bother me too much: it did bring up some questions though. The town’s buildings were pretty diverse: it had a small community college, an arcade, a public library, an auto shop, a garden and flower shop, and veterinarian office. Lots of books, studying equipment, chemicals products, seeds, tools, and diverse drugs (mostly for pets) to take back. I found so much stuff, I used one of the wagons in the garden store to haul everything out. It squeaked from time to time, but this didn’t matter. There was no one around to hear. The most exciting place was the arcade. I really wished it had a small generator so I could play a game. I miss video games. The saddest of the building was the vet office. When disaster struck, the owners and employees must had run off and left a lot of the pets in the cages. Inside the cages, I found dead, rotting dog and cat carcasses. Nothing was alive except for maggots. Some laid peacefully in their cages as if they just fell asleep while others, I found broken teeth on the floor on the cages and outside of the cages, indicating that they tried to bite through the metal bars. It made me wish I knew about them before they all starved to death. They probably would’ve died even if they weren’t stuck in the cages, but at least they’d have die free.
I had search the most of the stores when I moved into the neighbor to search there. That’s when things got dangerous. As I walked down the middle of the street, four or five windows opened up and suddenly, bullets were coming at me from left and right. I left the wagon and jumped behind a fence in the yard of what looked to be an empty house; that is, until the front window opened and a man leaned out with a shotgun. I quickly drew my handgun and shot the man, causing him to fall forward and out the window. Quickly, I crawled over with the others still trying to shoot me. I grabbed the shotgun, stood up and shot the person next door though it seems I only got their hand because they only dropped their gun. I dove through the window as more shots hit the wall of the house. I was now in a carpeted living room with a TV and sofas. As I looked around, there was a woman standing in the kitchen, pointing a rifle at me. I barely made it behind the sofa when she fired.
“Miss!” I called out, “I don’t want any trouble! I was only passing through!”
She answered back without hesitation. “You got trouble! You killed my husband!”
A young boy came down the steps across from me with a pistol in his hand and fired; it jumped out of his hand and it missed me completely, but made me roll out from behind the couch only for me to roll back as the woman shot at me again. She was moving closer to the sofa. The boy scrambled to pick the gun up, but when he saw that I already had my new shotgun pointed at him, he ran away to where he came from, leaving the gun. A man looked in the window, asking, “Where is he?” He had just seen me when I shot off his face.
“This doesn’t have to happen! Just let me go!” I yelled, “I hold no grudge against you.”
“There’s been too much blood spilled already! You must pay for it!”
I could tell by the sound of her voice she was almost right behind the sofa. I was leaning against it at the time so I spun around, put me feet underneath it, and kicked it forward, knocking it down and exposing her to the barrel of my gun. Had I been any later in pulling the trigger, she’d be telling this story. As the shotgun bullet pierced her chest, she dropped her rifle and fell background.
“Shot him! Shot him now! Shot him now!” she yelled and in response, tons bullets pierced through the front of the house and more followed. Luckily, the bullets were always at least 6 inches off the ground so I crawled across the carpet to the kitchen. As I approached the woman, she remained completely still that is, until my legs were near her and she grabbed them with the intention of holding me in that spot until one of the bullets got me.
“Jacob! Jacob!” she called out. At any moment, I could have been fatally hit so there was no time for mercy. I drew my handgun and shot her in the forehead. It was then only a matter of shaking her stiff arm off my leg and crawling in to the kitchen. From there, I went out the backdoor, only to find a man waiting for me. I dove out and managed to fire off a shot before he got the chance to. The rapid firing up front stopped and the movement of feet filled the once silent air. There wasn’t much time before they surrounded me so I ran around the corner of the house with a knife drawn and handgun out, and they were coming around the corner just as I was. A stab to the neck, a shot to the chest, two dead, and a hop over the neighboring fence. I reloaded my handgun and after a few seconds, I jumped up on the fence and saw three guys looking around cluelessly. I killed two of them and injured the other before having to fall back.
“Just leave me alone. I don’t want to fight.”
This must not have set well with the guy because directly after saying this, he charged over the fence and somehow fired off a two-handed shotgun with one hand. It nicked my arm, but mostly hit the fence. Two bullets to the chest and the man was down. I had hoped that that was everyone when I knew this wasn’t true. This town I walked into is inhabited by families, groups of people that did extremely well in eradicating the soulless. There had to be more, at least more mother and children baring arms. As fun as it is to take on an army by yourself, it is much tougher when the people you are fighting are smart, coordinated, and fight for a purpose. I wasn’t going to stay around any longer so I needed to devise a means of escape. There was a garage door on the house I was near so escaping by car was both practical and awesome. It wouldn’t open by hand and as I expected more bullets were flying in my direction so I broken through a window (which looking back on this, it was pretty stupid considering that’s how I injured my arm in the first place). I cut myself up a little, but nothing too major. Two men, a woman, and a boy were rushed into the room armed. I didn’t get too good of a look at them because I was already running for the door leading to the garbage. For some reason, they didn’t fire at me. I pulled a large workbench in front of the door to keep them from opening it and then went to the car. To my luck, it was a big, powerful truck. A broken window, a few wires and sparks, and it was ready to go. I broke through the closed garage door (after which, I found the garage door opener) and barreled down the street, only to stop and pick up my wagon. Dangerous? Yes, but it was worth it. In a short minute, I was out of town, but not out of trouble. As if I was psychic, two large soulless with blade arms got in my way. I was going to fast to stop so I rammed them. They died or at least were stuck under the truck, but the truck refused to move afterward. I really liked that truck.
It’s sad, really. No matter where I go, I bring destruction and death. Ann probably got a kick out of watching me today. I wonder what she thinks of the times where I am still, like last night. Would she leave me alone if my life was boring or would she try and make it exciting? Perhaps I should draw her out with boredom.
With my wagon trailing behind me and the night approaching once more, I climbed the same tree I had the night before and waited for either sleep to visit or for night to pass. Tomorrow will be no different.

Mike's Diary Day 66 - Oopps, WRONG WAY!

I couldn't sleep, so was Julie. I woke up 2 hours earlier and she. It was quite, and I was pretty sure the craze had given up trying to break the door open. I walked over and sat on the edge of the building, trying to get a clear view of possible escape routes, and there were many. The problem is that I don't know how to get down there, with Julie. I don't want to risk anything because our chances of surviving is low. I kept thinking, and I came up with a brilliant idea (50% chance of success). I woke Julie up and told her the plan, and she seemed like she had no trouble with it. "Better than being stuck here." She said. I took out a rope, not more than half a metre long, and I took my uzi out. I switched the magazine with my one and only extended mag, which loaded with 45 bullets (I didn't want to use it). I tied the rope from the trigger to the handle, turned the safety off, and threw it pretty far down to our left. Bullets start flying through the air, making such a magnificent noise pollution, and in the matter of seconds, all craze were running towards it.
"This is it" I said to Julie
                  "Let's do it." She responded.
I unblocked the door, opened it, and with only an axe in one hand, and a machete in the other, I rushed downstairs, while Julie followed. There were only several craze left in the building, which Julie and I took care of no problem. After we got out, Julie and I just kept on running towards the forest, we didn't stop one bit. I had a feeling that it will not only attract hordes, but only other survivors. I didn't want to encounter any, so Julie and I forced ourselves to run, even when our legs almost couldn't take it anymore. After we made sure that we were safe, we sat down for a minute or two. Julie was exhausted, and so was I. After we had enough resting time, we decided to continue our way back to base, but I didn't know in which part of the forest we were, so I decided to climb the tree and try to get an advantage point; however, we were getting nowhere. The view was blocked by other trees, which made it really hard for me to even see what's near our position. This is just great.
                    "Ha, we're lost" I said
                    "Good fucking job." She said
"Hey, I'm sorry that I had to make sure that we were safe, and get as far away from the city as possible." I said.
"Could do it without the sarcasm." She responded
Great, now what? I asked myself. I think our only way is to find our way back to the city and go back home from there. There's nothing to worry about now at least because the place is quite, so that we can listen to any movements or noise made by animals, craze, or people. However; I only have my handgun and a molotov left, so I don't know how we're going to fight back in a firefight. I hoped down from the tree, and checked our loots.
"Hey, we made a good run in only 2 days " I said
                     "What do we got?"
"Medicine, med-kits, canned food, water, matches, ropes, sweaters, t-shirts, books, and toys."
"Yeah, ain't we make a good team?" She said
                     "Sure. I guess."
"Awhhh C'moonnn. You should stop being so serious." She said
I opened 2 canned food and handed one to her, best one we had in a while, considering we didn't eat yesterday. I finished the canned food in less than 5 minutes, and so did she. We wanted another one, but I told Julie and myself that we should reserve that for later, and that we should start budgeting what we gather, and what we use. The evening approaches softly, Julie and I decided to get to the top of the tree to sleep in one of the branches, and tied ourselves to the trunk. Julie climbed up to the branch above me, and is staring right now at things, while I'm doing this. Yeah, we will try to find a way back to the city from here tomorrow, and hope that we will have a ride that we can use to get back to base. Our backpacks are getting heavy with loots, and a carrier wouldn't hurt.

Mike's diary Day 65 - Two Fuckers, We're Being Watched.

I woke up beside Julie this morning, I saw her yawned
"Good morning." She said. I smiled and looked at her 'hand'.
"Do you wanna anything on that?" I asked.
          "Yes, anything would be good."
          "Knife?"
          "Sure"
"Okay, we will get you patched up once we get back to base." I said to her.
I got up and checked the surroundings, while Julie was looting for some supplies. That morning was very sunny, breezy, all I could see UT the window was a torn flag waving in mid air, unfinished construction buildings, and some craze. Once Julie was done, I told her that we are going to a hospital near by to loot some medicine and other important stuff that we might be able to take.
I walked outside with my iron sight aimed down, I checked if the coast is clear, and I signaled Julie to follow right behind me. We turned left back to the ally way, proceeded our way through, and turned left on the second house. The road was empty so I decided to me a run across. We did, I could see the hospital building clear from where we were at, and I couldn't wait to see what's inside. For another 35 minutes walk, we arrived on our destination. We went inside, not too many craze so far, so Julie and I handled it though sweat. We started looting the stuff, first aid kit, alcohol, bandage, painkillers, and many more. I then proceeded my way to the emergency room, and I opened the door, I was greeted by two guys. Yup, they're all dead now. I talked my way out.
"Remember us?" One of them said
             "Nope, not a bit."
             "You destroyed our base."
"Oh, the Valors?" I asked while taking few glances behind them.
"Where is the girl?" The other asked
             "Or we'll kill you."
"Oh you mean that one?" I gestured with my head to look back when Julie stabbed the guy repeatedly in the neck. I took my gun and fired at the other before he could slash Julie's other hand off. Once the gun fire went off, all I could hear was craze's scream and footsteps.
"C'mon we gotta run." I said.
We ran away from the kitchen, trying to get out of the hospital, but we were blocked by a horde. We decided to find another way, but with no luck, we found dead ends. Our last hope was upstairs. I led the way, I pushed our way up and slashed some heads off along the way. We were terrified, I almost peed in my pants. We found a  door, I breached it open, waited for Julie to come, and closed it. I held the door with all my strength from the craze who were trying to get a piece of us. I quickly told Julie to find a metal to use the door. After a struggle, she found it, but it wasn't strong enough, so I decided to jam the door with anything we could find. We found chairs, sofas, and tables. Great, we're stuck now. Julie was breathing heavily, but was still able to throw out a smile or two. The sky is turning orange, it's getting dark, and we're stuck on the roof. Julie and I have to think of something tomorrow if we still wanna live for another day. In the other hand, I am worry that the other back at base are looking for us (well obviously). I hope everyone is still in one piece by the time we got back, especially Jack. One more thing, I hope the valors don't find their way to our base before we got back. They probably did, if they didn't, how the fuck did they know we were going to the hospital? Even more odd when they said
                  "Remember us?"
As if they were expecting our presence in the building. I am pretty sure, everyone (even the ones in our base) is being watched. Is it possible that they have an inside men, or women? I'm going to stop writing right here because Julie is telling me to eat.

Jack's Diary - Day 31, October 17th 2013

Things would've been a lot easier had I chose the correct safe house to begin with. I could have got Jane and went straight back the way I came. Now, we have to take a long detour to escape the pursuers. They're probably upset with me killing their men, but to track us this long and far is very strange. I would've just taken them out had there not been so many of them, about 35 or so. We tried to stay ahead of them, but every so often, they'd catch up and we'd be standing in a rain of bullets. However, out of all the shots they fired, they only managed to graze Tim's leg. As I've always believed from watching plenty of action movies in my youth, "Bad men equals bad aim".
About Tim, although we haven't had much time to talk, he seems like a good person. For some reason, he rarely questions where we are going and why (Jane may have filled him in on the details), but I guess being hunted by gun wielding morons has a way of bringing people together without an exchange of words. Tim was definitely a lot stronger than me and unlike Duke, was more humble and intelligent. I think we'd get along pretty well, that is, if he'd stop clinging to Jane. She really hasn't said anything me either since our first conversation. Then again, we've been pretty quiet as to not attract attention. Even at night when camping in the forest in the dark (where the hunters would never see us), we still kept quiet. The silence bothered me, but on the plus side, Duke hasn't said anything either.
We've travelled through neighborhoods, forests, highways, and fields to lose them and turn around, but it isn't working. We could head back to John's house, but I don't want to take the chance of bringing them with us. For the first time in a while, I don't have an answer. My only hope is that they'll get tired and leave or we may to go further out than I'd hoped. With four of us now, we need more food so we loot whenever we pass near buildings. I don't have to worry about Jane and Tim; looting, killing, and surviving are a daily route for them. Duke seems to be coming around as well. I was surprised at the small amount of soulless we came across. Tim wanted to kill them just in case they saw us, but I advised us to avoid them to create a few obstacles for the hunters.
We stopped for the night and found a nice large wooded area. Duke's on watch. Jane's asleep against a tree and Tim is carving a spear with his knife. I decide to do a little experiment that I started back at The Hill; I was going to attempt to make a flash grenade, just in case we get cornered and need a diversion. Some of my "friends" back then liked to trade skills in making weapons out of common household things (just like Macgyver). That's how I learned to make the taser. I, myself, liked to experiment and learn new ways of making things. With the times being the way they are now, I never got the chance to build the flash grenade and I wasn't even sure it would work, but I decided it couldn't hurt. I got a piece of flint and tied in off with copper wiring to the top of a lighter. Once the flint got cherry red, I could throw it at the ground and the flint's collision with the ground would make a bright flash. Then again, it could also explode in my hand, but if I have no other option, I'll take the chance.
I was just abut ready to take my shift when Tim leaned asked me, "why do care so much about bringing Jane to her father?"
"For a few reasons; her father saved me and taking her home brings purpose to my life. Besides, home is where we all belong."
I left for my post as Duke came back and in the mean time, I wrote this entry. The hunters haven't found us yet.

Day 15, July 11th 2013 - Teamwork Remember?

11:13 PM

"We're out of food, sorry guys. We should be divided into groups and loot these buildings." I said while putting the map of surroundings. "Oh man, Mike? When did you draw this? How do you know these buildings?" Lexi said. "Umm, reasons." I said, "Did you go alone man? What the fuck." I divided the group, Lexi with Jess since she isn't fully patched up. And I go with Greg. "Keep her safe." I whispered to Jess. They both went to the mini stores and we went to the sports store and some barber shop. "How old are you Greg?" I asked, "7" said he. "Your sister?", "She's 16." He responded, we looted some scissors, I got a hockey stick and a helmet, some baseballs and some football armour. I also got a bow and some arrows, I thought perhaps Jess could use this when those fuckers are chasing after us. After we got what we needed, we went back to the house and met up together. When I saw Lexi's face, "You're smiling, why? Tell me some good news Lex." I said. She didn't say anything and she dropped the bag full of bottled water and canned food and canned fruits. "Holy mama, that's some good shit." I said, then Jess punched me in the arm, "Oucchhh what was that for?", "Don't swear in front of Greg." She said. We decided to stay for a little while and eat some of the stuff that those two found. I showed them the bow and arrow and let Jess uses it. Though she needs practice, that's why I'll teach her sometimes this week. I have some skills, Phys. Ed experience. We went out for some more stuff and we accidentally encountered with some craze, there were too many of them. We decided to run, we found a huge wall leads to the other side, I boosted Jess, then Greg, then I boosted Lexi up, when I was about to climb the wall, I fell and sprained my ankle. I stood up an couldn't climb so I decided to run to towards the road, I fell again, then someone boosted me up and we run. It was Lexi. "Teamwork remember? I'm not fucking leaving without you." She said. We kept running, well I was limping. Then we found a garage door just barely half opened. I lifted the door so Lexi could put something underneath to hold it so we both could go in. We went in and closed the door. Then I passed out.
