Jack's Diary - Too Long - Day 123

It's been too long since I last wrote, mostly because I've been too busy with the present and didn't think I'd be alive too much longer so I couldn't risk wasting time with writing. I'm not dead yet, but it's clear I'm living on borrowed time. I now sometimes forget where I am momentarily, have intense migraines, and I feel a lot more tired (fortunately, these don't happen too often and very rarely during "interactions" with other people). It's terrifying, yet sobering to be at death's door. You see what's important and I'm still strong enough to do something.
Mike and the others didn't come along with me. I expected as much, but still wish they were here. I just want to make a difference before I die. I don't want to leave this world with a whimper, I want to go out fighting. Grant had the right emotions, but devoted them to the wrong thing. He gave up on doing what's right and chose to do only what gave him pleasure. I intend to succeed, even if I end up alone. I'm not angry with them. I could never be. Julie spoke to me just before I left. Even with a foggy memory, our exchange of words comes through clear.
"You sure you want to do this?" she asked, her face still beat up from Grant. I was hobbling myself.
     "Yes."
"I'm sorry," she said, almost unable to look me in the eye.
     "About what?" I asked.
"That guy said you only have a few months to live. No one else knows except me and Mike."
"Yah, that reminds me. I have you to thank for being alive right now. Had you not shot Grant, I'd be dead already. I owe you my life."
She smiled and said, "If that's true, can I have your sword?"
"As much as I'd like to give it to you, I need every edge that I can get now that I'll be on my own again. I've only got a short time left to accomplish my goal."
     "You're goal? What's that?"
"Let's leave that as a surprise," I said turning away, "C'ya, Julie."
As I walked away, although I didn't look back, I could somehow picture the scene behind me; a group of frowning faces, some waving, some looking away. I didn't talk much during my time with them. There really wasn't much to talk about, but even leaving a home you never liked brings a subtle feeling of sorrow to a time and season that's passed. It's all just memories and words upon paper and soon, the memories will be gone.
I suppose the reason I'm writing is for good news. I've gathered about three-fourths of the supplies needed to begin Operation Inferno (it tickles me a little with excitement each time I say). Bases and groups of survivors so generously "gave" me plenty of supplies. For all the enemies I already killed off from my previous time before meeting Mike, I think I made five times the amount of enemies. I tried to "accept" these supplies as discreetly and sneakily as possibly, but I often got too greedy. Not happy with having to kill and injure so many people. In my defense though, I did give most of them fair warning (I'd recently been doubting my skill, but having detained/killed 30 people attempting sneak attacks where I slept and having taken on a base of 20 guys alone, I feel awesome). I've also gotten pretty good with the katana; I've already decapitated two soulless and one guy's arm (I warmed him) though I'm definitely not samurai level yet. I also found an ideal city to set up the operation; it's a good size, not too many soulless and almost no survivors living in it and it's only 15 miles away from where Mike is (thought I'd let him see the results). Whenever I find supplies, I bring them back here.
I've got to be honest. I can't take all the credit for everything I've written her. Twelve days ago, I was searching houses and cars for tools, wood, sprinklers, and gasoline having just visited a small base about two miles away. I came upon a little tin shack. It looked like a tool shed so I went over to it, expecting to find some lumber or oil or something. It was locked. I lightly knocked to see if anyone was living there. That's when I saw a shadow approaching from the left, slowly growing in size. In a flash, I drew my handgun with my left hand, fired right into a guy's chest, then I quickly drew my katana with my right and whipped it to my right (suspecting there to be more) and the blade cut a woman's lip, throwing her off balance and I shot her. It didn't look like there was anyone else, that is, until someone landed on top of me, having jumped from tool shed's roof. She nearly had me pinned except for my right arm, which I quickly took advantage of and blindly elbowed her twice, the second   time hitting her throat. I shoved her off, stood up, and proceeded to land one powerful forward kick to her chin, sending her flying back. This knocked her unconscious. The gun fire brought more soulless than I expected, which created a problem. Usually I would stay, kill them, and continue gathering supplies, or if there really were too many, I'd shove anyone still barely alive who was too weak or too stupid to run in a car, house, or base. There was nothing near by to stuff her into and I couldn't just leave her there (in defending myself, I hadn't even looked at her in the face; in her twenties, very pretty, and just had a look of peace about her. It was one of the few times I felt guilty about defending myself). I picked her up, carrying her like the firemen do, and made the sprint to the closest building in sight, holding the katana in my free hand. When I got there, I rushed up to the second floor and barricaded the door. Eventually, I knew they'd lose interest.
Later, when she woke up, upon recognizing me, she backed up into a corner, pulled out a knife along and picked up a chair with the other hand. I won't go into the long details, but I'll give you the summary. I eventually talked her down to putting her weapons away, explaining myself and why I was at that tool shed. The people I killed were her friends so she held resentment toward me. I told her about my plan and although she thought it was crazy and only something a moron would do, she chose to help (I think this was because she hoped to kill me or I'd die in the process). Her name is Katy. The first few days were pretty rough with her getting a hold of a gun or something and trying to kill me. I always got the upper hand and stopped her. It reached the point where I went back on my desire not to have hurt her in the first place. Had she did this a few more times, I'd have killed her until on one attempt, she broke down and starting sobbing on my shoulder. Afraid the noise would draw soulless, I tried to calm her. She was angry with me, but she was also alone for the first time in a long time and I was the only person left. I'm sure she could have left and found others, but it's human nature to stick with the familiar, especially when you're scared. I knew the feeling. I told her about my imminent death, thinking at the time it would make her happy. It just made her cry more. From then on, we grew closer and so far, she hasn't tried to kill me again. At night, we talk about our pasts and the stuff we like. There are times where she'll stop for a few moment before quietly continuing the conversation, probably remembering I'm the guy who killed her friends. I taught her survival, combat, weapon, scavenging, and hunting skills. She really didn't have much to teach me, but she did take care of me when the problems resulting from the drugs began becoming worse. Funny. Just when things seem so good in my life is when it's coming to an end. Fate is strange. You'd think with all this time we're spending talking and training that the operation would be moving slower, but it's moving just as fast.
One more good thing. Now that I have a traveling companion, I have someone to fulfill my wishes after death. I've given her instructions on what to do with my body. I'm leaving everything in her hands, including the plans for Operation Inferno. I told her I hope she'll continue it after I'm gone because one go isn't going to be enough.
She fell asleep an hour ago. I feel the urge to do many things. To get up and kiss her on the forehead, to radio Mike and let him know I'm alright, but it's not the right time yet. I think I'll go to bed. Hopefully, I'll live to see tomorrow.

Mike's Diary day 48 - "Merry Fucking Christmas"

Today is December 25th. The day when Jesus was born. I woke up and saw Lexi who was guarding the tent at the time.
     "Merry Christmas Kiddo" I said.
     "Hey you remember"
     "Of course I do."
I got up and I went towards her and gave her a necklace
     "Here"
"You shouldn't have." She said to me.
     "That‘s my sister's."
I got up and told HR to pack up. I packed my things up and helped lexi to do her stuff. We are going to head towards the church and wait for Victor, jess, and Jack to catch up with us. I really wish that they are okay and none gets injured, or died.
We walked for s couple more miles, and here we are in the front gate of this magnificent building. The gates are gold, the walls are ceramics, the smell of rust overlapping the smell of dirt and corpses.
     "Let me Go in first."
"Careful, we don't need another dead man." She said.
I walked inside when-- the wall collapse separating meandering Lexi.
     "MIKE." She almost yelled
"Lexi, ready your gun and wait untill I come back. I'll find another way around. You wait three find some place safe, those three will be here any minutes so just sit tight and wait for them. Once you see them, tell them to find me, I'll be waiting here inside the building. Merry Christmas." I said.

I turned around leaving Lexi behind, I just keep walking until I see craze. I crouched immediately, picked up a rock and threw it across the room in order to distract the craze.I took one of them out with my crowbar, but the more I proceed my way through the church, the more craze popping out. I finally found a ladder, I thought if I could use this to go to the attic, I could make my way out of this building and reunite with the others. Plus Lexi, I just don't want anything to happen to Lexi. I climbed my way to he attic, very dust, and I fucking hate it. Oh well what else can I do right? I proceed my way out of the attic and jumped down. Finally, there Lexi just sitting down waiting for me.
"Plan b, this place isn't safe, lets leave a note to them that say go to the building across, third floor." I said, and she nodded. I felt relieved when I saw Lexi was still alive.

We went to the building across, it was almost the same condition as the church so we decided to go together this time. We will not taking the risk of being separated again. We went onto the third floor when we saw more clowns. I decided to take 2 of them out, impulsively.
"Alright Lexi, we'll be watching and waiting for Jack and group from through third floor. We can watch every movement from the window, and yo--"
"You move you die" said one of the clowns who was holding Lexi as a hostage.
"Please don't. Do anything to her."
     "You've killed my friend."
"They were trying to kill us no LET HER GO!"
Before I had time to say anything else, th bullet from his glock pierced through Lexi's head and she dropped dead on the floor. I rushed toward the clown, took my crowbar out and started beating him. I beat him to his death and throw him off of the building. I sat there mourning or Lexi's lifeless body. I cried, screamed, and the rage within me took over. Why the he'll did I even do this in the first place. I fell empty, as if there is no purpose to my life anymore. Just in time. Those three reached me.
      "Mike..." Jack said.
I didn't say anything and walked away from Lexi. Sitting in the corner mourning, crying, yelling, like a mad man. Merry fucking Christmas.

Mike's Diary Day 39 - Someone isn't gonna go home today.

I woke up the next morning, feeling so relieved knowing that I'm still alive and in one piece. Something is kinda odd though, I feel like there's something is missing, oh well. The old man made me breakfast, so I eat it.
"You didn't put poison in it right?" I chuckle.
"Why would I?why should I?"
"Err, I don't know"

I get up and brush lovely horse. She looks exhausted, well no kidding. She slept on a dirt lastnoght instead of her cozy, warm looking barn that's full of hay. Poorlittle thing. I don't know what the plan is for tokay, but for Dan sure I want to go back to base and spend no longer than another night outside with this old man and horse. I wonder what people in the base are up to today, and Lexi, and Moses, and Jack. Oh man ohman, its gonna be abother disastrous they for them. I pack up everything then off again to our jjourney in finding a way back home.

I was cruising a horse and then I felt something penetrates my right shoulder. The bullet makes its way through my?flesh and bones, the stinging of painT can feel, and I just fall off of my horse to the ground. I return fire
"Give me your gun!" The old man said, so I did. He then returns fire t the raiders, and I so cover his six with only a magnum pistol. My horse panics and ditched us two in the middle of a crossfire. Vision is starting to blur, all I can see is the oldman returning fire, then pass out.

Then I see faces of people I know who were eaten alive and turned to one of those... things. I see blood, dead bodies, and all the stuff that can possibly disturb for life. In my unconsciousness, I'm thinking "this is it". I saw light, a bright red light, thinking "am I going to hell?" I just wish that people won't be worried about me, so I can die in piece, but again it will never happened. I was about to touch the light when I suddenly I hear gunfire, I was woken up by the hissing of the bullets and the old guy yelling at me and pleas to God to save me and keep me alive. Part of mybody is aching and I can barely get a hold on my own gun, when suddenly another bullet strikes me in m leg. The pain I can no longer bear with, then so I completely unconscious

Mike's Diary - Day 37 October 25th 2013 - KEEP HER SAFE.

After that little argument with Jack, I didn't know where to find him the next morning. I was confused, I sent 3 scouts out to look for him. I was too exhausted, and I don't want to lose more of my men, Lexi and I were talking about the past and what she wanted to become before shit went down, a nurse she said, "HA. Nurse? You wee even scared to look at blood!" I said to her. Hours went by and I was still waiting for the duke brothers to find Jack - still nothing.

I called for a meeting, we need to get out of here as soon as possible and established some outposts. Around 20 minutes of the meeting, Jack came back. I am so glad that he was still in one piece; I told him "well well, who do we have here. Gear up, Lexi, Jess, you, and I are going to make a new outpost 30 minites south east from this area. Off we went, we didn't care about the craze anymore - stab here stab there, bash here and there. We went into a very odd building looks rotten and old, the smell of wounds and algae is unbearable. We went for a good place to establish an outpost and then boom, the roof fell in between us, splitting us into 2 groups, Lexi and Jack, Jess and I were on tenother side of the building. I slipped my hand trough the rubbles, grabbed and pulled jack's shirt and whispered loudly to his ear "YOU FUCKING KEEP HER SAFE YOU HEAR ME? ILL FIND A WAY OUT FOR US AND WE'LL MEET UP ON THE FIRST FLOOR, IN THE KITCHEN." He nodded, then we went our own separate ways. Who knows what's gonna happen, but i am counting on jack to keep Lexi safe.

Jack's Diary - Day 3, September 18th 2013

Even when it's completely quiet, there's no peace to be found when you're out in the open. At any moment, that silence can change and with that sudden ripple of sound, you're life is now at an even greater risk for being lost, whether you made the noise or something else did. I watched from a distance as these situations transpired, usually involving stupid and panicked survivors. Now, I know better than to mindlessly daydream on the unsuspecting field of battle.
I expected to see a lot more abandoned cars and objects on the highway than I had. Most of them were wrecked, dirty, and looted for parts. There was hardly any movement at all: no animals of any kind and no lost souls. At least, that's what it started out as. In the distance, I saw a few on a highway bridge. I couldn't resist. I lured them close to the side and knocked them off the bridge, one by one. I could only watch the last one fall since the rest began to make their way to me after hearing their "brother" get hit with my club. I didn't find any enjoyment in it, as much as I had hoped to. I kill for the sake of killing, merely to pass the time.
Passed the bridge near an exit off the highway, I spotted signs of a camp: a long since burnt out fire pit and a few logs and lawn chairs to sit on. Nothing too significant. Suddenly, my ear caught a sinister and weak groaning. I decided to cautiously check it out and was met with a most unexpected sight: a pit filled with lost souls. There were at least 14 of them, with many more on the ground, unresponsive. The pit was about 8 feet deep, completely flat with the corners dug out. In the center of the pit was a tall, thick wooden rectangular pole with a rope hanging from it and from that rope hung a body. From the looks of it, the body had no signs of change other than rot so it died as a human. There were also many cuts and lacerations on the body. I determined, although, this is just a guess, that this pit was dug for the purpose of collecting or trapping lost souls and that the body (whether it was alive when it was first hung is debatable) was meant to be used as bait to draw them in. As long as you didn't fall in, these things couldn't touch you so I could've walked away, but I didn't. I went back to the highway, found a small gas tank in the back of a pick up truck, siphoned as much gas from the vehicles as was left, went back to the pit, yelled out to the monsters to gather them into one spot, and doused them with gas. I lit a match and set them a blaze and watched as they walked about, some being more aware of the flames than others. I stayed until each of them burned to the ground. The "green" people always talked about the fact that humans leave a carbon footprint or a record of all the waste they've attributed to the Earth. I think of my actions as one in the same: I'm ridding the world of these things before the time that I become one myself.
To the pass the time, I looked around a little more and to my surprise, saw a small wooden fort in a near-by tree. This surprised me because of how well it was hidden. Had I not been actively looking, I would have never seen it. It looked like something used in hunting a long while back. I climbed up it and found a few useful object like binoculars, a slingshot, and a machete. I already had one machete, but you know what they say: better safe than dead!
As the fires burnt down to smoldering ash, I left without a single taste of satisfaction. I followed the exit ramp off the highway until I came upon a town. I decided to search the town, but I had no idea what I was looking for; I had sufficient food and water and the equipment I needed. I suppose I was just wandering around. In the distance, I thought I saw some movement. After three seconds, it gained in size and right then I knew that my life was at stake: it was a charging group of lost souls. I broke out the nearest window of a house and jumped through, toppling a tall cabinet over to barricade the now exposed window. I locked the door and rushed up the steps and opened the second door on the left and locked it behind me, barricading myself in there as well. There wasn't any time to check whether or not the backdoor was locked or to see if there was a backdoor. I could hear the pounding on the walls, the shaking of the house, and them rushing around on the ground floor looking for me. I don't know why they all did that. It was the same thing with the Hill. It's not normal behavior or at least what I am used to. Well, I figured that this gave me time to write. They might get to me soon so I should probably write fast. I'm not afraid to die.

Day 4, june 30th 2013

 2:18 PM

We continued our journey, we decided  to go take a look at the sports store. We were walking man, it was calm until this frickin dog barked. Though I saw a figure running away from us, he/she was about 5'5 we were about to run after him/her but the craze man. They followed us so we had to rush into the store and locked ourselves in. Now there are 3 craze and I took the first one out easy, put some choke. The next two, we had to co-operate with each other. I took the left and Dion took the right one out. We thought we were clear for a sec there, we looted some stuff, more damn weapons, and cash, thought it's pretty useless in an apocalypse like this. I'm hearing noises now from the safe room inside the building and we decided to check it out.

11:55 PM

Figured. One of the cutter was trapped inside, It took us hours to do so though. After hours and hours trying to figure out what to do, finally we found a way to kill this damn thing. We found an alcohol, put some fuse in it, burn it and set that fucking thing on fire. It worked, it fucking worked.  I'm exhausted, I think I'm going to delay the journey till tomorrow and thinking of making more molovs in case if we encounter one of the cutters again. I'm too exhausted, my cousin and the dog are too. We looted some stuff though, knives, baseball bats, some clothes, a tent, sleeping bags some junk. I'm wondering wether that figure is still alive or not. Maybe, it was the girl that the letter was talking about. Hopefully she's still alive. I'm really thinking of taking a rest for a bit and let Boomer keep the guard up. We have a shift now, 3 hours sleep for me, Boomer, and Dion, then we have to change shift on who's watching what. Boomer truly is a gift.

Day 2, June 28th 2013, 11:37PM - Family Reunion

Damn it, that was hell of a day. I survived this shit one more time, that's 1 day more to my life already. I woke up, scavenged for some more stuff since I haven't got the chance to scavenge it last night.  Some canned food, not bad, backpack, tape, scissors, well those are pretty handy I guess. I went out the house slowly, and yeah fucking craze everywhere. I had to keep my head low and watch my fucking six all the time. Man this stuff is making me sick already. Alrite, focus I told myself, I chose my path into the suburbs hoping that there are some more stuff or even a survivor. I heard something, it's inside a house, sneaked in there and when I open the door, "You motherfucker." I said to my cousin, "I thought you were dead, who's left?", "Only me", he said. "We gotta have to lay low". Thank god at least someone can get my six now. We went out, scavenged for some more lottables and of course, encountered with some more craze. My cousin and I better get our shit together if we want to survive. We traveled for about 30 mins outside the city, Quebec we thought, my cousin heard the military evacuated all the people there. But ditched his ass, not sure why. We were too tired to continue the journey, and we made a camp for the night in one of the building. Hopefully it'll hold. "You know how I said I wanted this stuff to happen? Well this is not what I've expected man.", "Told you so.", my cousin replied. Let's get some rest, then we'll think of something tomorrow. "God bless us man.".

Day 1, June 27th 2013, 12:13AM

I'm walking down a road — quite empty and abandoned. Empty cars and vacant buildings suggest no signs of life. I just woke up and I remember yesterday — yesterday, when everything was fine. The military evacuated the city due to infections and all that. I don't know what the fuck is going on now. It smells pretty fucking bad here, like rotten meat and asphalt and smoke mixed together. I walk towards a supermarket and see a person. Slowly sneaking up to her, I realize she's eating the hell out of a guy.

"Man, what the fuck happened here?" I whisper to myself.

I hide behind the counters, finding a baseball bat. Perhaps this could protect me for a while, I went to um, I don't know, the craze? Then I bash its head off. Then it hits me. I've been waiting my whole life for the apocolypse 'cause I thought it would be fun, man. This shit is nothing close to what I expected. I run away, panicking. These fuckers are all over the street. I end up in a small house — shit — there's even more of 'em in here. I try not to make so much noise and I manage to take two of them out. Thank god that was it. I scavenge the house for any lootables that I might be able to use in the future and I decide to barricade the house and spend the night here. I think — hell, why not start a diary?
